Frank Longstaff Apperly was born in 1888 in Shepparton, Victoria, Australia and died in 1961 in Richmond, VA, USA, where he had taught at the Medical College of Virginia from the 1930s-1955. He first graduated from the University of Melbourne in Australia (1910) and then won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University in England where he trained to be a physician. After serving as a doctor in WWI, he returned to Australia (with wife and child) and worked in Melbourne until the early 1930s when, dissatisfied with his career, he applied for and gained the position in Richmond, VA. Although he traveled extensively in middle-age and enjoyed a comfortable family life (two daughters) in Richmond, the most fulfilling period of his life was probably his student life at Oxford and the early years of European travel documented by the post cards.
