Physique Pictorial. Volume 7, Number 2, Summer 1957
n.p. (but Los Angeles): Physique Pictorial, 1957. Art-Bob. Wraps. 5-1/4 x 8-1/4" stapled photo-illustrated wraps. Unpaginated, but [32] pages, illustrated throughout with b/w half-tone photographs. A few tiny spots of soiling to the rear wrap, but overall a fine, pleasing copy. Bob Mizer founded the Athletic Model Guild (AMG) in 1945, and began issuing PHYSIQUE PICTORIAL in 1951 as a way to promote AMG's growing portfolio of male models and also the work of other artists and photographers such as Bruce Bellas, Tom of Finland, and Alonzo "Lon" Hanagan. The magazine continued until 1990, documenting the 20th century underground physical beauty movement, featuring "flexing muscle men both in costume and out, set among lavish landscapes or simply grinning for the camera in Mizer’s studio," along with their bios and contact information. Over the years the magazine inspired artists as diverse as David Hockney and Robert Mapplethorpe, not to mention countless gay men world-wide. This issue features model Joe Leitel on the cover and in the center spread, plus 4 pages of homoerotic drawings by "Art-Bob" (proably Mizer himself) in addition to the usual photography. Fine.
